Simplicity

Maida met with the cast and me and offered a few suggestions that were very helpful. I want to incorporate a very realistic base throughout the piece--one that focuses on simplicity and ritual. The basket and the fabric skirts reflect that very honest reality that I want to echo through the piece. I believe I might have a few vignettes throughout the piece that just show ordinary interactions with the art objects the dancers have been working with. This will include running through the fabric, folding them with someone else, passing the baskets amongst each other. I would also like to explore the various ways to wear the fabric. We'll see what is to come.

I like this simple movement a lot. I want to build on it and make this part of the beginning, as well. I think it is very beautiful.

A New Beginning

Adjusted the beginning of the piece last night. I will continue to build up the skeleton of the piece tomorrow. We will work a few edits here and there until the Adjudication "auditions" next week. Maida, my professor, will also be attending tomorrow night's rehearsal to give feedback.

Exploring New Themes

Tonight, my cast was incredibly productive. We worked a little bit on moving the phrase from Tuesday through the space and into different formations. I think I will exaggerate the beginning of the phrase more through the space before the formations begin to form next week. I like the partnering work and we will work on them further next rehearsal, as well.

I asked this pair to work on a basket phrase on the floor with the idea of a "working woman" in mind. I next asked them to connect it with the "name" phrase they had created a few weeks ago. The transition from new choreography to old was smooth. I am very pleased with this section and can't wait to piece this all together.

I asked these girls to make some movement using the skirts. I told them they were free to use the material in any form. They could use it as a skirt, a banner, etc. I really like this work and can't wait to see it added to the bigger picture. I really like the interaction between the two dancers; it's like partnering work using a prop. They are connected through the movement of this fabric. It will be quite beautiful under all of the lights.

This is just some new thematic work. We reworked the last phrase from the past rehearsal. The girls did a lot of the work themselves and I only added small details here and there.

Randoms, but I like them.

More Videos

I taught two phrases last night. Both need some work. I'd like to play with some dynamic changes and do a lot of editing next time.

A Glimpse of What's to Come

Hello Everyone!

We are into our fourth week of rehearsals. Incredible. I spent the weekend trying to brainstorm concrete choreography to teach my dancers, but wasn't really satisfied with any of my creations. I came into this rehearsal with some ideas of movement without any real basis and hoped my dancers would be able to come up with something interesting. It worked amazingly well. I had mentioned my interests in using this "basket-carrying" imagery, and brought in Ghanaian baskets to my rehearsal. Working with the physical baskets was so successful, I might need to invest in more of them. I also brought in some African fabric that I thought might help realize some kind of "skirt dance." With the help of these props, my cast really took to some interesting (and gorgeous) styles of movement. Everything seemed to click. Below are videos of some more formalized choreographed ideas, as well as some playful moments may or may not be expanded on throughout this rehearsal process.

I have interests to incorporate some varied cultural influences into some of the movement. Intertwining these varied cultural perspectives with our familiar modern context will continue to make this piece more universal, I hope. I will discuss this with the cast at our next rehearsal.

Improvisations

Here are some more improvisations from the first rehearsal. I asked the dancers to make an improvisation based on their name. They could draw the letters in space, interpret the name within their body more sensationally, etc. Then I asked them to create a duet, connecting their names. This is what materialized. Cool stuff. Well work more on these and projects like these over the next few days.

First Rehearsal

Hey All! Tonight, my cast met for the first time and it was such a success. I introduced my ideas for the piece and the cast seemed responsive to my ideas. Hopefully, they will feel like this is a piece about themselves and will feel that true commitment will, therefore, come naturally. I have high hopes for this talented group of people.

Tonight, we reviewed the audition phrase and I taught the longer, unedited version of the phrase. They dancers practiced it a few times to get a good rhythm going that made the phrase look good and more feasible. They really paid attention to the details, which made the phrase come to life in a whole new way. I like how it looks performed by all of them all together, so this may become part of the ensemble part that I have envisioned. It will be inspired by an image of women carrying baskets on their heads. This activity of carrying things on one's head isn't a local one, unique only to African women. In fact, both men and women carry things on their heads and backs all over the world. Activities that are universal such as this one are interesting to me and I hope to develop them a little bit more throughout the piece.

The music at this point is just providing us with a background beat and the dancers were told to ignore it for the most part. Here is a video of the group performing together.

The second half of rehearsal, I asked each dancer to create an improvisation of their name. They could:
1. draw the letters with their hands or feet (used like a pen)
2. make the letter-shapes with their bodies (Y-M-C-A style)
3. intellectualize  their names
4. internalize sensations (we didn't have to be able to see them as the audience), etc.

After they created a short piece for themselves, I asked them to partner with someone and put their names together. They were allowed to use only certain letters from each name and to incorporate the word "and" or the symbol "&" in between the names, etc. I wanted moments of physical contact, small lifts (if possible), and personal relation with the other person they were working with. Lots of interesting things materialized. I will upload those videos very soon in my next post.

My "homework" for them was to find a story happening right now and bring it to rehearsal. It could be a story about something happening to them or to someone else they know (or don't). We will do an improvisation using various narration methods.
